Based on the popular novel by famed Native American author Forrest Carter, it freely mixed violence and amorality to create a darkly ambiguous world where good and evil are almost impossible to distinguish. I certainly have that trouble with both of Carter's Josey Wales books, "Gone to Texas" and "The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales". I thoroughly enjoyed this story about the post American civil war out west. In reality, Forrest Carter was actually named Asa Carter who was a notorious segregationist from Alabama. The Outlaw Josey Wales is a going places Western. Watched the movie based on this book probably a year or two ago. The Josey Wales is very different in some ways to the character I know so well from the film but they both work well for the medium they are written for. The Outlaw Josey Wales was inspired by a 1972 novel by supposedly-Cherokee writer Forrest Carter, alias of former KKK Leader and segregationist speech writer of George Wallace, Asa Earl Carter, an identity that would be exposed in part due to the success of the film, and was originally titled The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales and later retitled Gone to Texas. In most ways the film mirrors.
